Gerber test method to check Butterfat in the milk is the most reliable and low-cost. Find below the step by step testing procedure for the Gerber Test.
Step1 - Take Milk Butyrometer of 10.75 ml
Step2 - Take 10 ml of sulphuric acid in the butyrometer from Tilt Mesure. (having a specific gravity of 1.807 to 1.812 g/ml at 27°C corresponding to a Concentration of sulphuric acid from 90-91 per cent by weight)
Step3 - Add 10.75 ml of milk from the average sample with Milk Pippet to the butyrometer.
Step4 - Add 1 ml of amyl alcohol through Tilt Measure of 1ml to the Milk Butyrometer
Step5 - Close the Butyrometer with Lockstopper.
Step6 - Shake the butyrometer to dissolve the milk elements.
Step7 - Put the butyrometers in the centrifuge. Centrifuging should continue for five minutes.
Step8 - Next plunge the butyrometers vertically, Lockstopper down, into a water bath, temperature 65°–70° C, and leave it there until you get the reading.
Step9 - The butyrometer, Lockstopper down, should be perfectly vertical when taking the reading at eye level. Read the graduation mark at the base of the meniscus, i.e. at the base of the curved upper surface of the fat column. If the degree reading is 3.2. The milk fat content then is 3.2% or 32 g of fat per litre of milk.
